OVERVIEW
Light Tackle Sportsfishing is conducted on Moana Fishing Charters all year round in different areas of the reef.
March to August is Spanish Mackerel fishing time. Averaging 15-20lb they are great fun especially on 10 & 20lb line. Fairly commonly caught around 50-60lb they do grow to 100lb!!
November to March is time to fish the outer edge of the reef for Sailfish, Big Mackerel, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi and small Marlin to 300lb.
The Moana Crew posing with a Black Marlin caughtThe main stay of the Light Tackle fishery is the Juvenile Black Marlin and Sailfish which are caught along the inside of the reef from March to September. From 10 to 150lb these aerobatic fish put on a spectacular display. When they feed aggressively multiple hook-ups provide lots of chaotic fun. Using 10-20lb line on custom rods and quality reels helps us to appreciate the speed and agility of the magnificent creatures.
Flyfishing for juvenile marlin and Sailfish prove to entertain and excite even the most experienced anglers. Day trips as well as Liveaboard trips are both great way to enjoy Light Tackle and or Flyfishing.

The Skipper
Moana is skippered by 37-year-old Daniel McCarthy. Daniel has been an avid fisherman ever since he could walk. His severe addiction to fishing began to be quenched as a teenager when he started as a deckhand on local charter boats in 1987.
In 1992 he had his first skippering job as a 21-year-old on a small local sportfishing boat.
Daniel has also spent five years as a State and Commonwealth Fisheries officer. During that time he greatly expanded his knowledge of the area of Cairns to Cape York and into the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Daniel has a great understanding of the fishing industry. In 1994 Daniel again was fulltime in the heavy tackle marlin fishing business and has been running Moana fishing charters since 2002. During which time he project managed and oversaw the building of the new Moana III which was launched in June 2006. It is Full Steam ahead!
Some of Daniel's career highlights to date include the capture of the Heaviest Marlin at Lizard Island tournament 2004 at 1072lb, biggest fish weighed for fleet 2005 at 1051lb, several over 1000lb released over the years with a couple estimated over 1200lbs. Most of all, Daniel loves having his clients enjoy their time on the boat, "It's great to see people really relax and have a lot of fun."
The gantry has now been removed from Lizard Island. The fish weighed in at 1072 lbs, going down in history as being the last fish ever to be weighed on Lizard Island.
Daniel engages only the most professional mates and crew available. These crew continue the high standards of Moana's operation and ensure your trip is both productive and very enjoyable.
Testimonials
To the wonderful staff & crew of the "Svanen" (1.30 pm BBQ Cruise on 25/1/08),
On behalf of our group of 4 (2 adults & 2 children), I'd just like to express our appreciation to all the staff & crew involved for making this cruise such a fabulous experience for us!
Special thanks to the operator who took our booking who specially organised "chicken" for our 2 Indian friends who do not eat "beef". Our friends were most impressed & very appreciative. For us, the steaks, sausages, prawns, oysters & gourmet salads were simply scrumptious! Our congratulations to the Chef!
We were fortunate to have a beautiful day and from the start of the cruise to the finish, the crew (including Debbie with her informative talks about the boat's history & facilities plus her ability to "get the kids involved in raising & lowering the sails", to the drink waiter & chefs) were all so pleasant & made everyone feel most welcome!
We all just loved the cruise (even as locals who have seen the harbour many times before) & we could imagine how impressive this cruise with the magnificent Sydney backdrop would be to overseas visitors.
Since returning from the cruise we have mentioned it to many of our friends & colleagues who plan to experience this wonderful day out for themselves with family & friends.
I know the kids put their names on a sheet for a future pirate treasure trip, but please keep us posted of any future trips or specials involved with your company. We would certainly like to come sailing again!
Thanks again everyone for a truly wonderful experience!
Kind regards,
Rayna Rozynski

I just wanted to say a massive thank you for the cruise on the Svanen my family and I enjoyed last week.
The crew made us all feel welcome and were very entertaining. The food was delicious and the wine and beer went down very well too! Although we've lived in Sydney for eight years, we've never taken a cruise around the harbour other than on the ferries, but there was something magical about being on a tall ship. It's an experience we can all treasure.
Thanks again.
